How are schools doing it?

On Saturday (15th. August. 2009), I and my partner Norazlina Hj Othman went to SR PKN Bukit Beruang, Tutong for a mini school research on how school used Technology in their lesson especially in teaching Mathematics & Science. Below is my report on the observation.

In my old days of school Science lesson was just an observation lesson where my teacher did all the experiments and we just stared curiously and wait for my teacher to explain. Now, there are many interesting ways in teaching Science and the common one used by me when I'm teaching Science is by hands on, minds on activity by using concrete materials. Pupils are asked to do the experiment on their own or in groups. They are also asked to predict the outcome of the experiment. Teachers are just there to guide the pupils and help them when needed. This is also called inquiry learning where pupils do most of the work and teacher guide them. Pupils was also taught by using discovery learning, where pupils find out what the lesson are about.

In my lesson, I usually used different strategies. Sometime I surf the internet to get some resources and activities for the pupils. The inquiry method is one of my pupils favourite activity because they will be able to do the experiments on their own. Sometime I also asked them to watch videos of certain topic of Science lesson especially the lesson which are a bit difficult to visualize such as ''Planet & the Universe". I also used the IWB in teaching Science lesson because in this way I can interact more with the pupils. They can also do the activity on the spot by using the pen.

Teaching Science lesson is preferable by using inquiry and discovery methods since in this way pupils can explore more on their own and use their mind in doing the activity.

Teaching Mathematics is different nowadays compared to those days when I was still in school. Back then my teacher just used simple objects, drawings and sometime just chalk & talk. But they cannot be blame also because that time resources and teaching aids are limited. Nowadays we can get resources from the internet and share with other teachers on how to teach certain Mathematics topic.

For me I used different strategies in teaching Mathematics so that my pupils will enjoy the lesson and pay more attention in the lesson. From what I had experienced pupils will easily get bored when we use the usual method in every lesson. To make my Mathematics lesson more interesting I also used some games with the class. I got some of the games from the internet and I used the games as the extra activities for the pupils when they finished their classwork. I also made use of the IWB available in school to teach Mathematics lesson because kids love interactive and they can also participated in the lesson actively.

Some other time we can also acts in the class so that they can understand the lesson better. For example before teaching them Money, ask them to acts as a shopkeeper and a buyer then relate what they have done with the lesson they are going to learn.

But usually pupils will enjoy more if the teachers teach them by using the technology because it is new experience for them and they will interact with their friends.

How should technology be used in Math and Science teaching and learning?

Technology is an essential tool for teaching and learning Math and Science. Teacher nowadays are very lucky due to the benefit of technology, they can create more interesting and fun teaching approaches and also save more time by using the technology. In this new era, pupils are more into technology and they are more attracted to ICT. By using the correct ways teacher can took the advantages of technology to deliver the lesson well and hopefully will make pupils understand the lesson better than the traditional method. But teachers must also prepare another ways of teaching in order to replace the planned lesson because unpredictable things can happen such as computers break down, error with the internet connections or else no electricity in school. Therefore teachers must be ready with another teaching stratgy if the first one is not success.

Today teacher can use Interactive White Board (IWB) that are provided to every schools in Brunei to make Maths & Science lesson more interactive and make pupils participate in the lesson actively. MOE also provided some educational CD-Roms that are essentials for teaching Maths & Science. Educational websites are also given for teachers' resources and references. By using technology teachers can create more interesting lesson by using Microsoft Office tool such as Powerpoints, Excell, Words.

In order to make the lesson more interesting & fun, teachers must also have creative & innovative ideas. Most of the teachers nowadays are equip with the use of technology because they don't want to be left behind by their pupils who are ICT literal.
